A study on Sayer’s translation of glaze color words in ceramic classic Tao Ya
陶瓷典籍《匋雅》佘义译本釉色词翻译探微

摘要

在“中华文化走出去”战略背景下，陶瓷文化英译与对外传播的重要性日益凸显，作为陶瓷历史与工艺书面总结的陶瓷典籍的翻译也受到了越来越多的重视。本文选取陶瓷典籍《匋雅》及英国学者佘义英译本为语料来源，以其中具体的釉色词及翻译作为研究对象，探讨了佘义在处理实物釉色词、“性状/实物+颜色”釉色词、同义釉色词时采用的直译、直译+脚注的翻译方法，并指出了其中的一些误译之处，以期对陶瓷典籍英译与陶瓷文化对外传播提供参考。

Abstract

Under the background of “Chinese culture going global strategy”, the translation and international communication of ceramic culture are becoming increasingly important, and the translation of ceramic classics as written summary of ceramic history and craftsmanship has also aroused much more attention. Taking ceramic classic Tao Ya and its English translation by British scholar Geoffrey Sayer as the source data, adopting specific glaze color words and its translation as the research object, this paper discusses the translation methods of literal translation and literal translation plus footnotes adopted by Geoffrey Sayer in translating object glaze color words, “properties/object plus color” glaze color words, synonymous glaze color words. Meanwhile, some mistranslated cases are analyzed. It is hoped that this study can provide some references for the translation of ceramic classics and international communication of ceramic culture.
