《新时代汉英大词典(第2版)》发挥图画优势,配置了152幅插图。这些插图种类较多,或涉及一个词语,或涉及多个词语;或辅助释义,或表明语义关系,或两者兼顾;图题涉及词目和例证;词类涉及名词和动词;有实物插图,有示意图;使用线条画而不是照片,突出细部,更有帮助。肯定其长处的同时,本文主要就其值得改进之处加以论述,比如1.插图缺乏辅助元素;2.插图未能物尽其用;3.插图未能兼顾两大英语变体;4.图题与词目或例证译文抵牾;5.插图可能误导用户;6.配套词插图配置失衡;7.插图体例不一。
The New-Era Chinese-English Dictionary (2nd Edition) takes advantage of pictures by includes 152 illustrations. These illustrations are of various types, either involving single word or multiple words; they either aid explanation or indicate semantic relations, or serve both purposes; the titles of the illustrations involve headwords and example phrases or sentences; parts of speech of the illustrated items include nouns and verbs; there are both illustrations of objects and schematic diagrams; using line drawings instead of photos to highlight the details is more helpful. While affirming their strengths, this article mainly discusses the aspects of the illustrations that need to be improved, such as 1. Some illustrations lack auxiliary elements; 2. Some illustrations can not fully serve their purposes; 3. Some illustrations fail to take into account the two major variants of English; 4. The titles of some illustrations are not the same as the translations of the headwords or example phrases or sentences; 5. Some illustrations can mislead users; 6. Imbalance exists in the provision of illustrations for words in the same semantic field; and 7. The styles of illustrations are not consistent.
