Abstract

Jia Pingwa's literary work Gaoxing vividly reflects the historical, social and cultural landscape of contemporary China. Its English version Happy Dreams is translated by Nicky Harman. Translation itself is a kind of ethical act, which is a subjective and active ethical activity to realize specific intentions in cross-cultural communication. In the study of translation ethics, Dutch translation theorist, Andrew Chesterman summarizes and presents five fundamental models on translation ethics: ethics of representation, ethics of service, ethics of communication, norm-based ethics and ethics of commitment, which provides a feasible framework for the study of translation ethics. This study adopts Chesterman's models of translation ethics as the research perspective and explores the embodiment in Gaoxing and Happy Dreams through comparative analysis. It aims to explore the translator's translation choices in language conversion so as to deepen the understanding of translation activities. It is found that Harman 's translation effectively maintains the faithfulness to the source text, meets the expectations of the target readers and the client, promotes cross-cultural communication and mutual understanding, helps standardize cognition with norms, and assume the professional responsibility of a good translator. It can be seen that translation studies from the perspective of translation ethics can make a more objective and comprehensive multi-perspective evaluation of the translator's translation choices, and carry out practice and exploration for the study of English translation of excellent contemporary Chinese literary works.
