A study on the English translation of culturally loaded words in Six Records of a floating life - From the perspective of ecological translation studies
《浮生六记》中文化负载词的英译研究——生态翻译学视角

摘要

文化负载词作为民族文化的核心载体，深刻凝结着特定社会文化的历史积淀与精神内核，其翻译本质上是跨文化语境下的意义重构活动。本研究基于生态翻译学理论框架，对林语堂英译版《浮生六记》中文化负载词的译法进行深入分析，针对当前文化负载词翻译中存在的文化差异与语义缺失问题，深入探讨译者在翻译过程中如何实现语言、文化和交际三个维度的动态转换与平衡，剖析四类文化负载词在译文中的翻译成效。通过对比分析发现，林语堂的译本灵活运用归化与异化策略，并辅以直译、意译等多种翻译技巧，实现了文化信息的准确传递与交际功能的达成。本研究不仅为译者构建文化意识提供一份理论参考价值和策略性思考，同时对于跨文化翻译研究也具有创新性价值。

Abstract

As core carriers of ethnic culture, culture-loaded words profoundly embody the historical heritage and spiritual essence of specific socio-cultural contexts. Their translation is fundamentally an act of meaning reconstruction across cultural boundaries. Grounded in the theoretical framework of Eco-Translatology, this study conducts an in-depth analysis of the translation strategies applied to culture-loaded words in Lin Yutang’s English rendition of Six Chapters of a Floating Life. Addressing the persistent challenges of cultural divergence and semantic loss in translating such terms, the research systematically examines how the translator achieves dynamic adaptation and balance across linguistic, cultural, and communicative dimensions, while evaluating the efficacy of four categories of culture-loaded words in the target text. A comparative analysis reveals that Lin’s translation adeptly combines domestication and foreignization strategies, supplemented by diverse techniques such as literal and free translation, thereby ensuring both accurate cultural transference and effective communicative functionality. This study not only offers theoretical insights and strategic guidance for cultivating translators’ cultural awareness but also contributes innovative perspectives to cross-cultural translation studies.
